pen drawing - lines as stiches - drawing as embroidery - protective mechanisms in nature -floral motives as “feminine art”

Plants are ready, with a whole series of internal and external defenses that make them a less appealing meal:

  • Thorns, Spines, and Prickles: Modified branches, leaves, or epidermal outgrowths that cause physical pain or damage to browsers.
  • Trichomes (Plant Hairs): Microscopic, hair-like structures on leaves and stems that impede insect movement, trap pests, or secrete toxic/sticky substances.
  • Silica/Leaf Toughness: Many plants, such as grasses, take up silicon from the soil to create abrasive, hard, or tough leaves that wear down herbivore teeth and mandibles.
  • Bark and Cuticles: Thick, waxy cuticles and rigid bark act as a barrier to insects and pathogen entry.
